Auger Rod
Traditional percussive drill steel works by means of percussive blow on one end - which transmits a shockwave down the steel to a carbide rock bit on the other end. The rock in front of this bit is shattered and the bit/steel is rotated slightly to shatter new rock. Simultaneously, air or air/water mix is blown down the steel and out the bit to clear the face of the bit and flush the cuttings up out of the hole. In extremely bad ground where the rock is not competent or there are fissures which absorb the blow air – the cuttings are not able to make it to the surface. This will often result in a “stuck” steel and having to abandon the hole, (not to mention – your steel and bit). Auger drill steel was designed with these horrific ground conditions in mind. It combines a high quality percussive drill steel with flights like a rotary drill. The flights act to facilitate bringing the cuttings out of the hole and also serve to help keep your hole straight.
