Rock Bit Care

Percussive rock bits do not “cut” through rock. Rock bits are designed to utilize the percussive energy of the rock drill to shatter the rock and blow the cuttings up out of the hole. When running in clay or dirt it creates a very big problem for a traditional rock drill/bit. Dirt and clay does not shatter and the percussive energy is simply absorbed and the blow air and drag of the bit across the material, are the only means to progressing the hole. In these cases “drag bits” can be a very effective way to deal with ground that will often shut down the productivity of a rock drill. Drag bits have carbide tipped welded wings on them and are made to actually “cut” their way through clay and dirt. Note: Welds do not hold up to percussion and only the rotation of the drill is used until you are back in solid rock. Then the bit should be switched out for a traditional button or cross bit.
